We may often take a loaf of bread for granted, but it was not so in Bible times. Bread was so important to people that in the Scriptures “bread” is often a stand in word for “food.” We can’t live without food and drink. But even so, the food is dead. Check out your refrigerator – it’s kept running to keep the dead food from decaying any further. And so Jesus said, “Your fathers ate manna in the wilderness and are dead.” Not even manna – the miraculous bread given Israel in the wilderness – not even manna gave life. It merely postponed death. Only truly living food could ever bring life. |

Often forgotten, though he shouldn’t be, on this day is this mysterious Joseph of Arimathea. He appears in each of the four gospel accounts of the crucifixion of the Lord. Let us think about him for a few minutes, become his admirers, and in the process, perhaps, deepen our faith. |
